August 5th marks International Beer Day, and it’s as good a time as any to check out the best ways to mix beer with oysters. As an oyster and cocktail bar, we can hardly resist the chance to talk about these delightful topics, especially simultaneously.
Best Oyster & Beer Combinations
Here’s Salt & Barrel’s take on the best oyster and beer pairings, organized by beer style:
-
-
- This is far and away the most common beer to drink with oysters. Stouts are the really dark beers that tend to be higher in alcohol content (though not always). There’s plenty of variety, but many of them have a complex array of flavors like coffee, toasted pecan, light vanilla tones, and anything else craft brewers can concoct these days.
- For oysters, we’d recommend seeking a lighter stout so that you don’t overpower the seafood taste. This takes a little experimentation, though. Examples of stout beers include Guinness Extra Stout, Flying Dog Pearl Necklace Oyster Stout, Prairie Bomb, and North Coast Old Rasputin.
-
-
- Many patrons prefer a lighter ale to complement their seafood experience. Wheat beer goes well with many food choices. If you like your oysters fried, then you may prefer to try them with a beer like Blue Moon or Allagash White. Sam Adams has several seasonal varieties of this style as well. Our closest option would be Athletic’s Golden Ale.
-
- Some folks enjoy a sweeter beer because oysters are a sweeter type of seafood. If this is your preference, then you have plenty of beer options with strong fruity tastes like Sea Dog Blueberry or even IPAs featuring pineapple or orange taste. Also, the popular Seltzer trend might work well with oysters since many of those have sweet flavoring.
